This article describes methods to convert SSDs from MBR (Master Boot Tape) to GPT (GUID Partition Table) partition structure. If you accept the legacy boot option ready in the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), it's possible the drive sectionalisation table is Master Kick Record (MBR).

If the drive is a secondary/information bulldoze (no Bone installed), you can use third-party applications such equally EaseUS* to convert from MBR to GPT.

  1. Confirm the bulldoze is MBR or GPT:
    • Open Disk Management by pressing Windows central + R > select Deejay Direction. Correct-click left panel for the Deejay being checked (for example Disk 0, Deejay one, and others) > Properties > Volumes.
  2. If MBR, convert to GPT:
    • Download and instructions

If you are accelerating the system disk (Os Installed) proceed with details beneath.

You might have the legacy kick option set in the BIOS:

  • After upgrading to Windows® 10 from an older operating organization (Os) version, such as Windows 7* or Windows 8.1*.
  • If you recently installed the operating system, setting the legacy kicking option in the BIOS.
  • If you recently installed the operating system and the BIOS was gear up to CSM, setting the legacy boot option in the legacy kick media sectionalization.

MBR vs. GPT Installation

You lot may lose some support with the MBR division tabular array on Windows 10, such as system acceleration with Intel® Optane™ retention.

The Windows 10 operating system was designed to install with the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) boot option and the resulting drive partition table GUID Partitioning Tabular array (GPT).

If yous want to convert your current sectionalization tabular array from MBR to GPT, nosotros recommend yous:

  • Safely back up all your data.
  • Reinstall your operating arrangement from a UEFI OS image with UEFI enabled in the BIOS.

With Windows® 10 Creators Update x64 (Version 1703, Build 10.0.15063) or afterward, there'south an option to convert the sectionalization tabular array from within Windows. Run across the steps for this option below.

Note
  • We highly recommended performing a backup of your data. If you have a second disk drive with enough available chapters, you can create a system prototype and recover the full installation equally it was before you started this procedure.
  • Download these steps to another computer or print them out. Some of these steps need to be performed while your Bone isn't active.
  • Create a fill-in of your recovery partition on a USB device. Once created, this bootable recovery USB tin optionally be substituted for the organization repair disc in the steps beneath.

Confirm that Windows is installed to an MBR sectionalization

  1. Kick into Windows.
  2. Open Deejay Manager. For Windows ten, press the Windows cardinal and the X key simultaneously, so click Disk Manager.
  3. Locate your chief system boot sectionalisation.
Locate your primary system boot partition
  4. Right-click the deejay shown as ( Disk x, Basic, Capacity, Online ) on the left (Where it says Disk 0 as shown in the image above).
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Click the Volumes tab.
  7. Hither you tin confirm the Partition fashion.

Convert sectionalisation table from MBR to GPT with MBR2GPT.exe

Requirements:

  • Windows 10 Creators Update x64 (Version 1703, Build 10.0.15063) or later.
  • A figurer able to kick UEFI. In the BIOS setup. (You should see options for UEFI boot.) Ostend with your computer manufacturer for back up.
  • Cheque the disk pre-requisites (including required space to store GPTs) in the following Microsoft* commodity: Disk Prerequisites
Note If you see an issue that states the MBR2GPT application cannot notice the Bone segmentation, see here for tips to resolve.

Instructions:

  1. Open up Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
  2. Issue the following command: mbr2gpt.exe /convert /allowfullOS.
  3. Close down and boot into your BIOS.
  4. Modify your settings to UEFI way.

Alternatively, you lot may run this command from inside the recovery environment:

  1. Boot to the Windows Recovery Surroundings and commencement the Command Prompt panel:
    • Press the Windows key and I key simultaneously to open Settings.
    • Select Update & Security .
    • Select Recovery .
    • Select Restart at present under Avant-garde startup .
    • Select Troubleshoot .
    • Select Avant-garde Options .
    • Select Command Prompt .
    • Information technology may prompt you lot to select a user account and type in a password.
  2. Event convert command: mbr2gpt.exe /convert.
  3. Restart your calculator and kick into your UEFI BIOS.
  4. Change BIOS setting from Legacy to UEFI fashion.

How to convert from MBR to GPT during Windows 10 Installation

This can exist used when this fault message appears: Windows cannot exist installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR sectionalisation table. On EFI systems, Windows tin can only be installed to GPT disks.

Scenario encountered: The message appears while selecting the drive to exist used as boot drive during the Windows 10 installation process.

Instructions taken from Microsoft support commodity:

  1. To open the control prompt during Windows 10 installation, printing Shift + F10.
  2. Type command: diskpart (to open the utility).
  3. Blazon control: list deejay (to show the disks available).
  4. Verify what is the desired drive to exist used equally kick drive.
  5. Inquire to type control: select deejay <the number of drive from step 5>.
  6. Blazon command: clean (this formats the drive, and you should wait for it to stop).
  7. Type command: convert gpt (This volition catechumen the partition table and a message saying it worked will show up).
  8. Type command: exit or close the control prompt with the Ten at the top right corner.
  9. Click the refresh button and try to install Windows 10* on the target deejay again.
Note

GPT is a requirement when you take UEFI BIOS style and want to install Windows 10. Also, all the information will be lost while these steps are followed.

MBR (Master Boot Record) and GPT (GUID Division Table) are two different ways of storing the segmentation information on a bulldoze. This data includes where partitions begin, so your operating system knows which sectors belong to each segmentation and which division is bootable. This is why you have to choose MBR or GPT before creating partitions on a drive.
